  • It's times like these when I know that grant money is being wasted: Four years and two mathematicians later, there is a computer model theory of the symmetry of snowflakes [Reuters] Come on people. Seriously? Two people spent four years of their lives coming up with an explanation to snowflake symmetry? Get a life! And yes, I love snowflakes.
  • Taping magnets to crocodiles brains [Reuters] so that they don't return to their original territory after being relocated.

Seriously. Ever.

I was just finishing up my chao and making my way back up to the office after lunch, and I happened to glance at this woman's ear.

She was wearing a belly button ring in her ear.

Singapore has some major fashion lows, but this? This "tops" the list.

I was in shock for a good 5 minutes.

Bunny is Angry at BK

Burger King is have a promotion for 4 chicken tenders as an add-on for $1.95.

I go in, not knowing that it's an add-on promotion and ask for two boxes of them. They say that they can only give me the 6 piece for $3.60. If I want 10 pieces, that means I have to pay $5.55.

Yesterday I went for McDonald's 9 piece McNuggets for $4.65. That means that my extra tendr cost me $.90. --> not worth it!!

I'm never ordering chicken tenders from BK again.

You make me upset! We're in a recession, you nasties! I'm hungry, and I want my food!

Electricity Runs Away

Do you see this?

I woke up yesterday in the middle of the night and saw this. No, it is not a black box.

Everything was pitch black because the electricity had gone away. It came back around 11:30 or so. It wasn't scary because I had my [stuffed] frog next to me to hold me. It's a bit intimidating to wake up to a black room.

And by the way, work is funny because I can hear the antics of the people next door. They sure are funny, even if they're speaking completely in Chinese. ;)

Travaille?

I'll be honest. I hope she loses the kids. We all get that she loves them, but I don't think she can even support one. She even started asking for donations. She's unemployed. And now she's losing her house? Child Services needs to step into this picture. Urgently.

There needs to be a word when you emphasize something by italicizing, bolding and underlining it. Perhaps I will come up with my own word:
  • bolundericizing
  • itaboldunderlining
  • underbolitalicizing
  • bunitaling
OK I give up. We'll just go with overemphasizing for now. ^.^

My Secret, Secret Love

I recently learned about a Korean martial art called Shim Gum Do (Mind Sword Path).  I was telling my friend about it, but I told him that I'm currently halfway in love with Wushu. He asked me what it was. I just wanted to share the Youtube video here:

And just for good measure, here is a Youtube video of Shim Gum Do. I think that this is more for novices, but I could be wrong and offending people. Sorry if I am. >.<

I have a secret love of martial arts due to growing up on Chinese kungfu dramas (thanks to Daddy).

Science Update - TomatoDNA has moved here!

What is exciting in the genetics world today? The one that I've been sadly, absent from for so many months?

  • Scientists have proposed a new mechanism for molecular genetics [Nature] - the evolution of the ribosome.
  • Making neural stem cells pluripotent with the tweaking of one gene Oct4 [Nature]
  • Tumor progression gene not so incognito anymore! [RPI]
  • A gene mutation that may explain the association between osteoporosis and atherosclerosis [Artery Research]
  • Interesting interview with Haifan Lin about moving from stem cells to identifying important genes that allow for their multipotency (etc.). [Nature]

  • Conus purpurascens venom operates this way:
As far as we know, the venom effect is due to many types of conotoxins that act in synergetic way. The W-conotoxins hinder the entry of the calcium into the nerve ending and inhibit the acetylcholine release. The M-conotoxins modify the sodium canals in the muscular cells. The A-conotoxins block the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors. Olivera and colleagues have emphasized the importance of two different types of peptides isolated in Conus purpurascens - the conantokins and the omega-conotoxins - in the nerve ending inhibition. A peptide that induces drowsiness in the guinea pig has been isolated in Conus geographus.

Internet Explorer 8

Oh look what we have here:

Windows Internet Explorer 8...

So what does Microsoft say?

  • Accelerators
They provide instant access to information, such as mabs, searches, translation, etc. You can just highlight a word or phrase and go from there.
  • Visual Search
Adding graphics and images to "enrich" the search. Hm...
  • Web Slices
Subscriptions to certain portions of websites are now possible!
  • Suggested Sites
I suppose this is similar to StumbleUpon for Firefox. I'm sure it has a substancial database already that may be better coded than StumbleUpon.
Other things, according to Microsoft:
  • Improved Performance
  • Improved Search
  • Smart Address Bar (as opposed to a dumb one)
  • New Tab Features
  • Tab Grouping
  • Improved Zoom
  • Find on Page
  • Privacy
  • Compatilibyt View
  • Automatic Crash Recovery
  • SmartScreen Filter
  • Domain Highlighting

I'll update my opinions on the browser tomorrow because I'm on my way home!

My Online Shopping Tips

This post is totally dedicated to my best friend, JTW.

Love you!

Let’s see here, if I was looking for something specific, where would I look?

I love to get ideas first and then look into more affordable:

I obviously can’t afford most of these places (save, Forever 21), but I look for ideas in the upper ended ones and try to find something similar in a department store. Also, you always ALWAYS should look under the Sale items.

I hope this helps you!

Wrinkly Peaches?

Spoiled rotten --> me

Spoiled rotten to the core --> me this weekend

Hi Mom,

I went for a massage and facial yesterday. After eating a sub-par sphaghetti and meatballs for dinner (which I couldn't even finish and I sort of felt terrible afterwards for overeating), I went to the National Library and read Michael Crichton's Congo. I think Tinkers would like it, but she still hasn't made any [sudden] movements to read even though I tell her all the time. She's bad like that.

I went home and talked to Tinkerbell about her fantastic interview with Yale! I am so proud of her, Mom!

What else? I stayed up until Dad tells me to go to sleep. Imagine, someone on the opposite side of the Earth telling me to go to sleep. What is wrong with this picture?

So on Sunday I was supposed to go cycling, but my friend is leaving for Australia soon, so we postponed the dinner part for sometime this week. She treated me last time, so I want to treat her!  Well, I worked on something that I'm writing and talked to a few friends today. I also ate a bunch of grapes. I don't know what happens when you eat a lot of red grapes (by the way, I prefer white grapes...future reference for you), but I'll let you know. For instance, if my skin turns slightly purple, I will let out a scream so loud that even you would be able to hear it. I also learned that when you leave white peaches in the refrigerator for too long. They get all wrinkly! How cute.

Hmmmm so then I watched Shark Tale and will maybe squeeze in a conversation with you on the phone in a little bit.

Much love,
M

Mandarin Oranges

GASP:

I ATE TEN MANDARIN ORANGES IN ONE WEEK.

NEXT WEEK, I AM BUYING TWENTY. I LOVE MANDARIN ORANGES.

They are easy to peel and to enjoy. And because I'm not eating in front of anyone else, I don't mind spitting out the seeds.

HOORAY!!!!!!!!

HOORAY ORANGES!!!!!!!!

For the rest of the world who doesn't know......I am super picky about oranges. I only take navel oranges (and now, mandarin).

OH YEAH, HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGE WASHINGTON! :)

Secret Questions

Yeah, there are lots of secret questions that I've seen, such as:

  • Mother's maiden name
  • Father's middle name
  • Elementary school name
  • Name of first pet
  • City of Birth
But none quite as Singaporean as these:
  • What is your street name?
  • What is your favourite hawker centre dish?
  • What is your girlfriend's dialect name?
ROFL

What a Wonderful World

Do you know what makes the world wonderful?  Perhaps puppies, Louis Armstrong, or pizza come to mind.

Well, I've got something better than all those - combined.

It's called "Crunchy Time," and it means that I woke up one day, walked to the bus stop listening to music, heard the most delicious-sounding crunch ever, looked up, and saw the entire sidewalk lined with crunchy leaves.

This picture is worth a thousand crunches followed by shouts of joy!

Valentine's Weekend

Don't worry, Mom. I don't have a boyfriend --> my Valentine's day was spent entirely indoors while you told me that you were eating cua (crab). Thanks a lot.  Yeah, stinkerbottom. I don't like you very much.  The next time I come home, there better be one of these bad boys waiting for me on that dining room table of ours. (Just kidding....but like...within the week of my glorious return?)

Sunday was a lot of fun! I'm a little sore right now (perhaps too many euchre games, tinky, where you will find me hunched over the screen yelling explicatives at you for making [another] mistake) because I went cycling again at East Coast Park.

East Coast Park (which is completely untrue because it is along the south-east coast of Singapore - the east is actually where the airport is, but they just call that region "Changi") is littered with fast food and normal restaurants, 7 Eleven (which, along with "Cheers" represents a majority of convenience stores here), random clothing kiosks, some bike/inline skating/skateboard rentals, and some [bizarre] bits of amusement park.

East Coast Park is like a little 'downtown' of the East Coast.

Yes, Mom. This guy has the best job in the world. He runs a booth where you race remote controled cars.

There were some random gardens in the middle of the bike trail. I thought everything in bloom was so nice - I'm surprised that I haven't see a wedding on either Sunday that I've been here at this site.

Some random tower where people can skate.

Cutest little boy chugging away (much to the exasperation of his older "Beckham" brother)!

Singapore has little "work out stations" littered all around the island. I've never seen people use them before until now!

My favorite (and most laughable) place is the remote control speedway. Last Sunday consisted of a crowd and the [deafening...LOL!] roar of...oh....wait....for....it.....remote control cars. ROFL! (roll on the floor laughing, JMS.)

Unfortunately, the race was later in the day. :(
STILL! REMOTE CONTROL CAR SPEEDWAY.
>.<

Also, Singapore is a bit strict about its campgrounds (yes, there are lots and lots of tents that are set up at East Coast Park), and apparently you have to apply for a permit in order to reserve a barbeque area.

The water actually looks lovely from the pictures, but my best guess (because the water is shared with not-so-far ships/ocean liners) is that Singapore treated the hooloopah out of it. Just a guess. I wouldn't put it past Singapore to try to maintain its tourism factor.

We made our way over to the pier and rode out to smell the [awesome] scent of the sea (and get scorched by the sun [Note to Self: Trees do not grow on piers.].  There is this one website calledGigapan, and it allows people to look at gigapixel pictures.

For instance, if you look at Obama's inauguration, you will see SEVERAL Supreme Court Justices asleep (Hi-larious).   Back to the subject - I wish there was gigapixel picture of the scene today. The sun was so nice; on the right you would have had the beach with all its palm trees and children running around, and on the left you would have all these enormous ships anchored there.

Love,
Sans

PS We went for dinner and then the National Library. I read Michael Crichton's Airframe. I think The Lost World was a lot better, but I am more of a science person than an engineer. :)

My To and From Work

This is my typical day when I'm walking out to the bus stop to get to work!

This is my most favorite mango tree in Singapore (the only one that I've seen) in the center of the picture. Hooray mangoes!

Sidewalk shot. I see that motorcycle parked all the time. There is a big downward slope around the motorcycle, and I call this the valley of the ants. I don't know why, but there are SO many ants around there.

Picture of a typical, residential street lined with cars on one side.

This place went up in less than 9 months. It was done so efficiently!!

Some neighboring flowers

More neighboring flowering trees.

East Shore hospital (getting closer to my bus stop!)

Prawn (Shrimp) Mee (Egg Noodle) Shop on the left side of the picture, East Shore hospital on the right. This is the only intersection that has seen my face too many times. There is a bus stop near the Prawn Mee that takes me to the train station when I need to travel more than my 2 mile radius ["bubble"]. It's next to that little green tent thing.

A 'ghetto' convenience store (mostly selling crackers, chips, and drinks) and an out-of-place bike repair shop.

And now, into the PM

This is a shot of the playground in the plaza (Marine Parade Promenade) next to my office building with a McDonald's to the right.

This is my office building "Parkway Parade" with a few bank signs below it.

This is a shot from the overhead bridge when I'm walking to my bus stop to go home.
Wee Fast car!

Why are the cars on one side white lights and the other red lights?
Haha, just kidding.

Another shot of the 'mall' part of Parkway Parade (the office side is to the left). This is the entrance and taxi stand of Parkway Parade. Don't worry. Bus 76 isn't mine.

Well, that's just a glimpse into my daily travels in Singapore. Finally, it has become a routine thing.

Oh yeah, and a big Happy 200th Birthday to Abraham Lincoln!

If I Only Had Three Days in Singapore...

My friend will be accompanying his mom for a business trip to Singapore sometime in March, and since he's only going to be here for a few days (though I probably will be working during the day), I'm thinking about the things that would be essential to a trip.

So to put this into a semblance of an itinerary:

Day 1
  • Morning bike ride/stroll through East Coast Park
  • Katong Laksa for lunch
  • Stroll through Raffles Hotel, Raffles City and City Hall area (spy on locals to hear Singlish)
  • Dinner: Arab Street
  • New Asia Bar to see Singapore at night (Swissotel)
  • Prata Time! at Bencoolen for Supper
Day 2
  • Stroll through Vivocity
  • Hawker Center Chicken Rice or Bak Kuh Teh
  • Go to Sentosa for a few hours (look at construction of IR)
  • Sunshine Burger for Dinner near Queenstown MRT
  • Check out Mohammad Sultan Road
Day 3
  • Visit the Asian Civilisations Museum, National Museum of Singapore or Singapore Art Museum
  • Lunch at Amber Restaurant in Little India
  • Stroll through Orchard Road and Botanical Gardens
  • Chili Crab for Dinner at Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood
  • Stroll through Clarke Quay/Boat Quay
Note: this is for adults only! There are obviously more kid-friendly things to do, like run through the fountains at Marine Barrage or Clarke Quay, have a picnic in Botanical Gardens or Sentosa, or exploring Arab Street a little bit more.

Year of the Ox

I was shopping in Giant and came across this. I furtively took a picture and ran away!!!

that is, before anyone could yell at me. :)

Cyling Sunday

On Sunday, I went cycling with Charlene at East Coast Park - and it was SO much fun! Weather permitting, I'm going to plan to go out there.

The deal with the bicycles was great! It was $6 for an hour - you buy an hour, and hour free. Awesome!! So it was only S$12 for both of us (US$9).

We went pretty far....from ECP to the Sailing Club. I don't know the distance exactly, but maybea total of 10-14 km. The breeze was so nice, and it was only sunny for a little bit (don't worry, Mom, I put on sunscreen). There were so many almost-accidents because people like to whiz by and expect you to know that they're coming without them ringing the bell. Or there are people not paying attention that walk through bike trails. Or there are kids who are super slow and taking up the opposite direction lanes. Sigh. Or pedestrians who don't know that there is a PARALLEL trail meant for them.

So on our little adventure, we went by a (ROFL) remote control race (yes...there was an intricate speedyway AND a crowd) and some random gardens! The garden was sweet and in bloom. I'll take pictures next time I go cycling. People were windsailing, and tents were up all over the place. It started to sprinkle around 5:15, and since the bikes had to be back by 5:30, we dropped them off and took a break in McDonald's.

We took a cab to Bugis Junction to look at some clothes.

This is the view from our table at NYDC
(I had to ask for this seat or else they would have made me look at another restaurant...why do you have to ask? Shouldn't they know to make customers feel special?!)

Then we ate at NYDC and had an oven baked penne pasta with mozarella, sweet corn, and bacon (delicious but I'm glad that we split it!!).

Then we across the street to the National Library.

I like to run around here sometimes and pretend I'm on a CIA mission. Hoho!

The lobby of the Singapore National Library.

I got lost in Michael Crichton's The Lost World, and Charlene was running around checking out books. :D I have to finish it, but I feel a bit guilty that I didn't read Jurassic Park first. Oh well! I love his books (except Next) because they are filled with humor! I know my Tinky would enjoy reading them.

Then I went home and just talked to family. My bum still aches. :(

Seafood Birthday Party

After work yesterday, I went all the way to Casuarina Rd for some Ban Leong Wah Hoe Seafood for a friend's birthday party. It was SO delicious. It worked out to about $30-35 per person, but the guys were very kind and paid for the girls.

So here is my tale of a fabulous seafood dinner.

I arrive on time: 7:15 PM. We're all here by 8:10. Yes, I waited for a very long time, and I had time to buy a small tiramisu cake (which was delicious!!) from Chocz. I could seriously eat one cake by myself. DELICIOUS.

Apparently "pineapple" in Chinese sounds like "bring in luck"
...so this explains the hanging of pineapples everywhere

Before the showdown....while I was waiting.

Having fun with macro focus :p

Being totall American and drinking Coke

Lou Hei before we got to it.

Oh dear, the Lou Hei after we attacked (I mean.....mixed) it.

Oh look. Vegetables. Put sesame oil on just about anything, and I will eat it.

My short little arms meant that everyone helped me reach for food. It's a mixture of dried and thinly sliced fish and vegetables - plus some crunch fried bits of dough and heaven seeds (oh I'm sorry. I mean sesame seeds).

WHAT? WHAT IS THAT? Yes, yes.......yes it's venison. Deer meat. Lovely. Yum.
Baby corn makes every meat dish better.

This restaurant offers "drunken prawn" (what a lie), but we opted for the fried prawn instead (prawn = shrimp). Unfortunately, I don't eat things with eyes still in them. Except crab because crab trumps eyes.

Fried chicken wings. Delicious, but a bit too oily for me.

Most delicious fish ever!! The sauce was surprisingly similar to nuoc mam.

Chili crab (Singaporean specialty) was SO DELICIOUS. OMG.
It might have taken me about 20 minutes to get through the shell, but I have major weakness for crab.

Fried pau (bao) that you're suppose to eat with the chili crab sauce.

They tried to get me to try fried calamari. I told them I don't eat fried spiders. :)
I fed it to Hanying instead. Heehee

Yam cake.......they also tried to get me to eat this. They failed. Again.

Tiny Tiramisu Cake that was delicious and full of yummy coffee liquor!
Happy Birthday Hanying!

Group photo!

Ingredients of the Lou Hei

A cute pair of oxen. How auspicious.

Afterwards, we went to "Happy Daze" in Serangoon Gardens for some quality friend time and then went home. I couldn't fall asleep right away, so I bothered a bunch of my cousins in LA. :)

Much love,
M
